Famed for her reclusion, Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886) sometimes surprised her correspondents by including verses and poems in her letters. She only ever saw six of her compositions in print out of a total of 1,775. When her complete works were finally published in 1955, her lucid, solitary mind was confirmed as one of the fundamental poetic voices of American literature.
